I ate at the Morrissey Pub tonight for the third time. Drawing me there was the availability of Whistler Brewery Chestnut Ale (seasonal!!! and not available in BCL). If you are a fan of Granville Island Winter Ale, this is like it's tougher big brother, it's delicious! There is about a month left on their keg, so head there soon before they run out!
Anyways, to the food. My first visit there with Bry-man we splurged and pigged out on the Gruyere cheese fondue with cheesy bread. It was phenomenal! Really, truly awesome. So awesome that only it, and the chestnut ale can be recalled about that meal, despite having had mains afterward.
Now tonight I tried out their Hippie chick burger (see their menu and description here). It was AWESOME. Priced at only $11.00 I decided to upgrade to the 1/2 fries & 1/2 salad option. For those of you going to visit on my recommendation, please don't bother with their salad. It's just a small piling of lettuce. There is not a single bit of vegetable on there, and was a serious disappointment, even for a side salad. The fries were good though I would go with this option.
The big bonus was when the check came. They didn't point it out but my burger was only $6.00... because it was Wednesday?... I think?.... but I was quite pleased by the surprise. Overall, the ambience is very cool and eclectic, and at night it's candle & lantern lit adding a bit of romantic sway. The menu is brief but satisfying and quite delicious.... but don't bother with the side salad. Enjoy :)

TV got funnier after all of the wine!
I came a-stumbling home Tuesday night and plunked myself down in front of the ole tube to wind down from a fantastic dining experience at Earls. (I'll tell you about it in a sec...first what I watched). It was awkwardly charming, and the writing was fun. I didn't think I would enjoy it when I had come across it previously, but this weeks episode of "Raising Hope" entitled "Tarot-Reading" was witty and goofy. Enjoyable dialogue, and perfectly random. Great Tuesday TV. Heh, I was so buzzed when I started writing this, I thought it was Friday.... mmmmm Friday.
It was a refreshing change from the rather predictable writing of Hollywood, ahem,.... Alcatraz....
No. Raising Hope delivers curiously nutty lines such as: "Making a living selling ground up pig parts".... and "Oh you're going to Love Africa.... I've only seen it in cartoons, but it looks hilarious...."
Include an uncensored Cloris Leachman in this ensemble of quirky folk, delivering passionate acting, and you have a shit load (what the hell would that BE anyways???) of fun. Perhaps it was because I came at it with NO expectations that I was not disappointed. Perhaps it was the wine. (I'll tell you about the wine in just one sec.... "BUT JENN WE WANT TO HEAR ABOUT THE WINE!!!") I really enjoyed watching this, and just might tune in next Tuesday on City TV if I happen to be home. SO, **Thumbs up**. Thanks for entertaining me.
Now, on to Earls Restaurant, where I was a ViPPPPPPPer treated to some unbelievable hospitality. We had the Sous Chef (Nick Hrynkiw) at our bidding, and we were introduced to our 3 course meal in detail by himself and the Day Leader (David Vo) before dining. Each course was paired with a delectable, and perfectly chosen bottle of wine, starting with a glass of Yellowglen Pink sparkling wine.
We were even offered the opportunity to participate and roll out and cut our own Gnocchi (the dough of which was made from scratch earlier that day), plus a tour of the prep kitchen. Each of our hosts demonstrated such pride in their work, and every single bite of food was simply to die for.
So, the Wine:
Charles Smith Wines, "Vino" Pinot Grigio (no other restaurant carries this subtle crisp white wine, but it is available in BCL stores)
-served with a Maple Glazed Salmon Salad
Joel Gott Zinfadel (quite a warming red, with heavy spicy notes)
-served with our Gnocchi with Italian Rose Sauce
and lastly Errazuriz Carmenere "Estate" (From Chile, and my favorite out of the bunch with a slightly lighter spicy flavor, and the presence of a dark cherry notes)
-served with the Porcini Crusted Filet with Truffle Chive Butter...... DROOOOOOOL
They are looking to show off what they can do, and there is something for everyone.
These were our hosts:

Nick Hrynkiw - Sous Chef
Stefan Oostveen - Lounge Leader

Salsa and mozzarella Chicken!
DAMN! thank you Bryan's Mom!!
Wonderful things happen with two Chicken Breasts! We added some fresh diced garlic under a mild salsa. Then topped with grated mozza. Only half of what was grated made it to the chicken. I like my cheese!!
Pop 'er in the oven at 350 for about 40 minutes. And throw whatever you like on the side!
In this instance, we had the ever trendy (and really tasty) quinoa. And steamed veg. :)
Happily a $10 bottle of BC wine was gracing my fridge, so we unscrewed that... And finished half before the chicken was done.
With company like my Bry-man, and a great dish before me... I was in pie-eyed heaven. The whole evening was concluded with half a Lindt 85% dark chocolate bar.

Thanksgiving - the Foodies holiday!
My parents don't do Thanksgiving. At least not in the traditional sense. They will certainly take the day off without blinking an eye, but when it comes to the true purpose of Thanksgiving (Food) they opt out!!
Outrage!
So when Bryan texted and said 'let's cook dinner' my brain went off! I pulled out the tried and true holiday recipes for stuffing et al. and we hit the grocery store!
Quick menu looked like this:
-Homemade cranberry sauce
-Vegetarian stuffing (w/ apple, dried cranberries, crushed pecans and mushrooms)
-Roasted vegetables with a Herb Cheese sauce
And
-TURKEY breast (there was only 2 hours to cook everything so we couldnt do a full bird y'see)
-Pumpkin spice cake (pre-made but DEEEE-LICIOUS and easier)
We got to cooking, and discoverd we made a good team. In that we both felt we should first eat a Reese Peanut Butter BIG CUP.... because we were hungry from all of that food shopping and recipe hunting... and then we cracked beer one and got down to serious cooking. (insert bong hit)
Half way through, we discovered that we were making WAY too much food for the two of us. So called my sister up and asked if she could make it over in an hour or so to help us eat. She assured me she wouldn't miss it!
It was a great meal (which will be repeated for three days WOO LEFTOVERS), and I managed to get a nice table set JUST in time for sis to walk through the door. Don't you just love when a (last minute) plan comes together? ;)

Pancakes are the clear winner of Saturday breakfast!
I have an eye for presentation, and an ability to cook (sometimes with the assistance of 'mixes' ;) which is why I have an issue with expensive breaky places.
Not expensive, and the simple arrangement will impress any sleep over guests to no end!
**tips**
-own a small hand held sifter (icing sugar, cocoa, cinnamon can all be sifted over the plate for effect and extra flavor!)
-always have fresh fruit (or at the very least frozen) in the house. It's f'n good for you m'kay?
-pancake mix is awesome when you are in a last minute pinch! Add your own flavor with cinnamon, mush up a banana in with the mix or throw in a handful of berries!
Treat yourself as a guest too sometimes!
